Dissecting fine root diameter distribution at the community level captures root morphological diversity

چکیده
Characterizing plant functional diversity is essential to decipher community assembly rules and ecosystem functioning. Most studies focused on above-ground traits whereas the analysis of root lags far behind. We analyzed structure fine (< 2 mm) diameter distribution at level as an indicator morphological diversity, hypothesized that shape provide insights types exploration strategies. tested this hypothesis along a successional gradient (6–69 year-old) with yearly mowing better understand regarding belowground processes, explored relations between parameters describing its modes vegetation composition ecological properties communities. communities showed multimodal distribution, two main corresponding absorptive roots (thinner mode) transport (coarser mode), third mode lower importance large roots. In early succession, thinnest was prominent, reflecting dominance thin low proportion roots, resulting in diversity. As succession proceeds, relative second increased, proportions were more balanced, increased variance Furthermore, first (absorptive roots) became wider shifted from very thicker suggesting coexistence various strategies for resource exploration. Yearly did not affect which may relate pressure enabled woody species remain, stunted stature. Overall, our study demonstrates diameters sheds light level, hints co-existence use

Fine root morphological traits determine variation in root respiration of Quercus serrata.
Fine root respiration is a significant component of carbon cycling in forest ecosystems. Although fine roots differ functionally from coarse roots, these root types have been distinguished based on arbitrary diameter cut-offs (e.g., 2 or 5 mm). Fine root morphology is directly related to physiological function, but few attempts have been made to understand the relationships between morphology a...
متن کاملDissecting Arabidopsis lateral root development.
Recent studies in the model plant Arabidopsis provide new insight into the regulation of root architecture, a key determinant of nutrient- and water-use efficiency in crops. Lateral root (LR) primordia originate from a subset of pericycle founder cells. Sophisticated mass-spectroscopy-based techniques have been used to map the sites of biosynthesis of auxin and its distribution in Arabidopsis s...

Effects of root morphology on stress distribution at the root apex.
It is thought that the stress concentration at the root apex caused by orthodontic force induces root resorption. The purpose of this study was to investigate stress distribution at the root in cases of deviated root shapes using finite element models (FEMs). To clarify this, five three-dimensional FEMs divided by deviated root shape (normal, short, blunt, bent root apex, pipette shape) were co...
